We have been at Warderick Wells for three days. Yesterday, we hiked up Boo Boo Hill to leave our boat sign. Mark used a 1/4 inch router bit on a laminate trimmer to carve the letters and then filled them in with white paint using a syringe, because we didn’t have a paint brush. He also spread a blue wash over the board. We found the piece of wood on a beach in the Exumas. It is traditional for cruisers to leave the name of their boat on a piece of driftwood on the hill. We found our good friends’ sign which they left here last year. They are Alice and Gavin from
Salty Dawg. We nailed ours right above theirs and also pounded another nail into theirs as it was coming loose. Their sign is made with tiny shells, each letter a different shell. The “G” was made with tiny conch shells. Beautiful!!
First we had to walk up the hill. In the photo we are standing by the sign to “Boo Boo Hill” at the left and up above us is the hilltop where the signs are left. In the photo of us next to the hung sign (below right),
Seas the Day is anchored in the water just over Mark’s right shoulder. While it looks like a mess, it is fun to look through the signs and find them from friends we have made along the way. The hill near the bottom of the page is Boo Boo Hill taken from our mooring.
We had been anchored out near Emerald Rock for two days and on Thursday we were able to get a mooring ball in the north mooring field which is protected almost all of the way around in a small “hole.” Tomorrow we will go about 42 miles to Eleuthera, crossing the Exuma Sound. The forecast is for 2-3 ft seas and favorable wind direction, but only 6-10 kts. That means we will be motorsailing with very little help from the wind. It will take us most of the day so we’ll leave at 6:30 am as soon as Mark has walked Daisy. We’re excited to see a totally different area of the Bahamas we haven’t visited yet.
Daisy has gotten very good at swimming and we are a short distance from the shore to our mooring ball. Mark let Daisy swim most of the way back to the boat. (photos below) She was on the beach below Boo Boo Hill for her late afternoon walk.
