We got off early this morning as there was no fog. We had a nice wind and got a few miles down the GIWW when we saw three barges stopped ahead of us and a bank of fog. (Photo above) So, we dropped the sails and lowered the anchor to wait. The next ten miles or so were in dense fog. Finally, it started to lift and we went on ahead. Apparently, these big barges just pull over to the side of the GIWW into the mud when there is fog. Last night, it was foggy and we heard them all calling out where they were pulling over. I think we are the only sailboat out here, but maybe we’ll start seeing more passing us going east now that Christmas is over.
After we started again, we were making good progress and we came upon another back-up of barges. They asked us to let them by, and we did, but when we pulled over, we went aground. Mark was able to get us out.
Another new experience today was going past a cable ferry. In the picture above you can see it. Rather than have a bridge, there is a ferry boat which brings cars across the water. It drags a cable across the water, so you can’t go over it until the cable ferry is back in it’s spot.
We made it to Intracoastal City about 3:00, filled the fuel tanks, and tied up to their dock. There is a store next to the marina, so we got some provisions. It is getting foggy again tonight, so we’ll probably have a late start again tomorrow.
