Day 4 Pearl River to New Orleans Mile 3 E
Day 4 Pearl River to New Orleans Mile 3 E
Sunday, December 21, 2008
We anchored in a narrow, deep channel last night and awoke to low tide. We were aground in about 3 feet of water with a muddy bottom. (Our draft is about 4 1/2 feet.) We pulled up the anchor and backed out easily. The cold front obviously came through during the night as it is much cooler and windier today. It was raining when we pulled back into the GIWW and headed for New Orleans. It was a short trip in miles but very slow going.
Daisy waited patiently for us to lower the dinghy when we got up, as it was 24 hours since she was ashore on Horn Island. Unfortunately, we had nowhere to stop, so I put on her leash and told her we were going for a walk. We “walked” up to the trampolines on the forward deck. She had gone there once before on our three day sail across the Gulf. She thinks she is “outside” when she’s on the deck, so luckily she relieved herself on the rope trampoline and is now much more comfortable.
We met a lot of commercial traffic in the narrow waterway today. Then, we had to go under a railroad bridge and a lift bridge. The wait for the RR bridge was long as a train was on it, waiting for something. Once we got through that, we had another long wait at the lift bridge. Apparently an electrician was on the way to fix one of the traffic gates. Finally, we passed under that and made it to Seabrook Marina. No one was here, although they knew we were coming so we pulled up to the fuel dock and tied up at 3 pm. We have no shore power, but that’s OK. At least we are tied up and safe. Tomorrow we’ll fill the tank and continue to travel west through New Orleans. At the speed we are going, we figure we’ll be in Corpus Christi in ten days, which is New Years Eve.

This is the narrow, deep channel we took into New Orleans. It’s part of the Intracoastal Waterway.
