Day 1 Dog River to Dauphin Island Mile 120 E
Thursday, December 18, 2008
The dense fog lifted around 10:30 am, so we dropped the lines, (thanks to Pam and Jim for their help), and went under the Dog River Bridge (first photo). This bridge is a 73 foot fixed clearance bridge. Our mast, including instruments at the top, is 67 feet. Coming under it when we first arrived in early November, it was dark and the tide was up. In the dark it looked like we only had a foot or two to spare as our flashlight shined on the underside of the bridge. This time, we left at low tide and there was at least 4 or 5 feet of clearance. The fog had lifted, but 1 1/2 hours later, still in Mobile Bay which is 23 miles long, fog appeared again. We were in a heavily traveled commercial channel, but there was plenty of room to let the big ships pass us. Still, we had to see them, so were thankful for radar. Since we started late and the sun sets around 5:30, we got under the Dauphin Island Bridge (last photo) which is 83 foot fixed clearance, at the other end of Mobile Bay, sailed a few more miles, and anchored out the west end of Dauphin Island. Of course, we then had to lower the dinghy and take Daisy ashore. The island is very narrow with the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) on one side and the Gulf on the other. From our anchored boat, we can see a sandy beach with glassy waters but we can hear the crash of waves on the other side of the beach. Tomorrow morning, we’ll take a longer walk on this sandy beach.
